For 2020, 2 377 malaria cases were reported in the EU/EEA, 2 369 (> 99%) of which were confirmed. Among 2 088 cases with known importation status, 99.8% were travel-related. Five confirmed cases were reported as acquired in the EU (three by France and two by Greece). The number of cases was substantially lower than in previous years, probably due to the reduction in travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. As in previous years, the overall rate of confirmed malaria cases was higher among men than women (0.4 cases and 0.2 cases per 100 000 population, respectively; male-to-female ratio 1.9:1).
