In 2017, 25 353 people were diagnosed with HIV in 30 of the 31 countries of the EU/EEA, an adjusted rate of 6.2 cases per 100 000 population. Several countries were well above the average. The majority of people diagnosed with HIV in 2017 were men (75%) and the highest proportion of all new diagnoses (38%) were attributed to sex between men. Heterosexual contact accounted for 33% of cases and injecting drug use for 4%.
