Project Visit Africa CDC

Project visit of ECDC to Africa CDC: Event-Based Surveillance mobile application 7–11 August 2023, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia  

From 7 to 11 August 2023, two experts from ECDC’s Epidemic Intelligence (EI) team and one ECDC expert solution architect from its Digital Transformation Services visited Africa CDC to progress the development of a new mobile application that would enable healthcare and community workers to collect information from the field regarding public health events of interest and transmit it to national public health institutes.  The aim of the application is to easily and rapidly forward information that will be consolidated by Africa CDC headquarters. This application, in combination with other tools used by Africa CDC, aims to improve continental harmonised event-based surveillance of infectious diseases, a main objective of the project. 

 

NFP Meeting

Visit of Africa CDC experts to ECDC, 12–15 September 2023, Stockholm, Sweden

From 12 to 15 September, three Africa CDC experts from its surveillance and emergency preparedness and response (EPRS) team visited Stockholm. They attended the National Focal Points’ (NFPs) annual meeting for preparedness, response, threat detection, early warning and response system (EWRS), and International Health Regulations (IHR). The meeting was organised by ECDC to provide NFPs with timely information and to consult them on strategic and technical matters as well as foster guidance on the planning and shaping of future activities. The experts from Africa CDC had the opportunity to present their main activities in this field and network with participants from various countries as well as representatives from other CDCs. 

On 14 September, Africa CDC representatives were invited to participate in the workshop on artificial intelligence for threat detection and early warning systems, while the rest of the time was dedicated to streamlining the plan of activities for 2024.    

FAO Meeting

Public Health Intelligence Trainings within the EIOS Initiative, 26–28 September 2023, Rome, Italy

From 26 to 28 September 2023, experts from ECDC’s EI team were invited to attend the Public Health Intelligence Training in Rome organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI), and the United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC) within the Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) Initiative. During this meeting, ECDC’s EI team met with Africa CDC counterparts in the “ECDC for Africa CDC” project to better understand the respective areas of collaboration with Africa CDC and create synergies in the implementation of activities planned for 2023 and 2024.
